Primary Retroperitoneal Tumors in Adult



Abstract
Primary retroperitonal tumors are uncommon group of neoplasm. It implies the neoplasm that arising from the potential retroperitoneal space. We excluded the cases that presented under age of 15, metastaxized from other part of the body and lymphomatous group in this study.
We analysize the 27 cases of primary retroperitoneal tumors in adult at the Seoul National University Hospital, Department of Surgery, for past 10 years from 1972 to 1982.
We have been able to summarize as follows from this study.
1) There are 15 malignant tumors(56%) and 12 benign tumors(44%). The leiomyosarcoma (5 cases) and liposarcoma(3 cases) are two most common type of malignant tumors. Neurilemmoma(4 cases), teratoma(3 cases), paraganglioma(3 cases)are most common type of benign tumors.
2) The primary retroperitoneal tumors may occur in any age group, but 10 cases(37%) of the patient occurs in 5th decade and 21 cases(80%) of the patient occur under the age of 50. There is no sexual difference in incidence.
3) The most frequent symptoms are abdominal pain(59%) and palpable abdominal mass (59%). No genitourinary symptom is presented in this study.
4) The positive physical findings are palpable abdominal mass in all patients and abdominal tenderness in 7 cases(26%).
5) IVP and barium contrast gastrointestinal study, are valuable in diagnosis, but recently USG, CT and angiography are more valuable in diagnosis and therapeutic planning.
6) Aggressive radical surgical excision is the treatment of choice for all tumors. But adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy are introduced in the inoperable or palliative resectable cases. Radical excision is performed in all benign tumors and 4 cases(27%) of malignant tumors.
